The proposal for innovative
digital multimedia and graphic design company, Afrikings sought
to create a building of breathable volumes and a bold, graphic
architectural language. The new head office is to be constructed
in Midrand, on a site dominated by indigenous Highveld grass.
The architecture complements the stark landscape by employing
an architecture based around strong concrete forms, with its materiality
contrasting the dense grassland, through its general simplicity.
The interesting form of the building is a direct result of
strict planning restrictions, its gentle forms subtly curve,
while strong walls contrast, intersect and divide. Central to
the design is a large volume which transcends all levels; the
purpose of the shared volume is to create a strong core of functional
overlap and transparency, where the building’s various
elements combine in one cohesive area. The central volume also
acts as a light well, beaming natural light into the building;
here the building becomes one with its environment, as large
windows pull the grassy landscape into the volume.
The building also has a strong public arrival space, which
intersects with the core, greeting visitors with a light, voluminous
atrium space; here advertising makes its impact, as this space
is designed for the gathering and movement of staff and visitors.
The cafeteria in the building is designed in a similar manner
to the atrium, as a place of informal meeting opportunities.
The Afrikings building
is to be an iconic landmark with the company’s branding
is incorporated into the building’s envelope. The building
is modern, strong and designed on principals of honest materiality,
architectural simplicity and an enhanced, natural working environment.
